The hour-long consultation is paid at booking, the matter and the documents arrive before the appointment, and video opens the practice to those far away.

The challenges facing solicitors
The phantom appointment
Someone books an hour's consultation, does not come, and does not ring back. An hour of a solicitor's time cannot be recovered, and it counts at the hourly rate.
The first appointment starts with half an hour of background
What it is about, since when, what has already been done. Taken out loud, that is chargeable time spent listening to what could have been read in two minutes.
Reception filters, but is not there in the evening
Half the enquiries arrive after 7pm and at weekends, when nobody picks up. A contact form promising a call back is not an appointment.
Clients at a distance
A matter does not stop at the county boundary. Video widens the practice, but it needs its own slots and its own link.
Documents missing on the day
The contract, the letter before action, the claim form. Without them, the consultation turns into booking a second consultation.

Practical guide: Solicitors
- Take payment for the consultation at booking, not afterwards: it removes the phantom appointment, and nobody minds when it is stated up front.
- A required "type of matter" field with a closed list — employment, family, property, crime — lets you know in ten seconds whether the matter is for you.
- A free-text "where the matter has got to" field saves you the quarter hour of background at every first consultation.
- Create the video consultation as a separate service: it does not share slots with an in-person one, and the link is created automatically.
- Fifteen minutes of buffer after each consultation to write the attendance note and the quote while it is fresh.
- Write your cancellation rule into the booking conditions: it shows before payment and applies without you having to defend it.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a solicitor's consultation cost in the UK?
Around £150 to £400 an hour depending on area and seniority, with fixed-fee initial consultations commonly between £100 and £300. Set your own prices.
Can I publish my fees on my booking page?
Yes, and for some work you must. The SRA Transparency Rules require firms to publish price and service information for certain areas including conveyancing, probate, employment tribunals, immigration, licensing applications and debt recovery, together with complaints information and your SRA number.
Is taking payment at booking compatible with the SRA rules?
It needs care, and the answer turns on the SRA Accounts Rules. Money received in advance for costs not yet incurred is generally client money and must be held in a client account, not spent as office money — that is the trap. Money received for a fixed fee for a service already delivered, or which falls within the limited circumstances the rules allow, may be office money. Kagenda pays into the Stripe account you connect, so connect the right one and take advice from your COFA on which fees may be taken up front. Whatever you do, the client must be told in writing what the fee covers before paying.
How do I collect documents before the appointment?
By listing them in the confirmation message and asking for the key facts in custom fields.
Is my clients' data confidential?
Nothing is read, nothing trains a model, and you remain the controller of your clients' data. Legal professional privilege and your duty of confidentiality are yours to uphold; Kagenda is a processor and holds no case files.
Can I manage several solicitors in the same firm?
Yes, each with their own diary and services.
