The challenges facing sailing schools

  • Courses sell by the week, hire sells by the hour

Two units of sale in the same centre. A diary that only knows one forces you to keep the other on a chart, and it is the chart that gets it wrong.

  • Each class of boat has its fleet and its capacity

Six dinghies, three catamarans, eight paddleboards. These are not slots, they are hulls, and there is a finite number.

  • The wind decides, and it decides late

Postponing a whole group should take a minute, not an hour on the phone. The message goes to everyone, with the new date.

  • The summer course gets booked in February

Five months between the booking and the course. Without a deposit, February's list has nothing to do with July's attendance.

  • Height, weight, level: the kit gets prepared beforehand

A wetsuit, a buoyancy aid, a suitable boat. This is information to ask for at sign-up, and it saves the first half hour of the course.

Practical guide: Sailing schools

  1. Two families of service: courses, sold by the week with fixed dates, and hire, sold by the hour on open slots.
  2. Each class of boat is a counted resource: six dinghies means six places, however many people ring.
  3. A deposit on courses booked far ahead. That is what turns a February intention into a July attendance.
  4. Weather cancellation from the diary, with the new date in the message. A whole group told in one operation.
  5. A required "height, weight, level, can swim" field at sign-up. The kit is out before the group arrives.
  6. A reminder the day before with the list of what to bring. It prevents half the morning delays.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sailing course cost in the UK?

Around £250 to £400 for an RYA Level 1 and 2 dinghy course over a weekend, £400 to £700 for a week, and £30 to £60 an hour for dinghy or paddleboard hire. Set your own prices.

What recognition does a UK sailing school need?

Two things, and both are real. If you teach under-18s commercially, the Adventure Activities Licensing scheme applies: watersports are within its scope, a licence from the licensing authority is required, and operating without one is a criminal offence. Separately, to issue RYA certificates you must be an RYA Recognised Training Centre, inspected annually against the RYA's standards for instructors, ratios, craft, safety boat cover and shore support — the RYA inspection is what most centres experience as the binding regime. Add MCA coding for any vessel carrying passengers for reward, enhanced DBS checks for work with children, and public liability insurance.

Can I sell week-long courses and hourly hire?

Yes, as two families of service.

How do I count my boats?

By declaring each class as a counted resource.

How do I postpone a whole group because of wind?

From the diary, with the new date in the message.

Can I ask for a deposit on a summer course?

Yes, with the terms shown before payment.
