The challenges facing martial arts clubs
Juniors, teenagers, adults, graded students
Four groups, four classes, and a sign-up that has to route people without you reading every name.
The mat has a surface
Thirty people on a mat laid out for twenty is a dangerous class and an instructor who can no longer correct anyone.
Gradings
A date, a panel, a call-up, and sign-ups to collect in two weeks.
Parents signing their child up
It is not the student who books: the reminder has to go to the right number.

Practical guide: Martial arts clubs
- One class per group and per grade, with its capacity. The routing does itself.
- A "grade and year of birth" field at sign-up: the sorting is done before the class.
- The grading declared as an event with limited places, with its date and capacity.
- Put the parent's number on the record: that is who gets the reminders.
- Set the timetable on recurrence and close the school holidays in one operation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cap the number of students per class?
Yes, with a capacity per class.
How do I handle junior sign-ups?
With the parent's contact on the child's record, and a field for grade and year of birth.
Can I organise a grading?
Yes, as an event with a date and limited places.
Can I manage several instructors?
Yes, each with their own diary and classes.
What does a UK martial arts club have to have in place?
Martial arts are not regulated by statute: no licence, no protected title, and no qualification required by law. Three things nonetheless decide whether you can operate. Insurance, which normally comes through affiliation to a recognised national governing body and requires an assessed instructor qualification. Safeguarding, which is not optional if you teach children: enhanced DBS checks with the children's barred list, a welfare officer, a written policy and a reporting route — the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, backed by Sport England, is the standard local authorities and leisure centres ask for before letting you hire a hall. And weapons: replica and training weapons are generally lawful to own but carrying them in public is an offence without good reason, so transport them cased.
