Booking software for Surf schools
The timetable follows the tide, the kit sets the capacity, and a weather postponement tells the whole group in one move.

The challenges facing surf schools
The timetable depends on the tide
The slots are not the same from one day to the next, and they shift by about fifty minutes a day. A schedule fixed on round hours does not describe this job.
The kit limits the capacity, not the beach
Twenty wetsuits, fifteen boards suitable for beginners. The number of places is the smaller of the two, and it is never the number of instructors.
A weather postponement concerns the whole group
Too much swell, a thunderstorm, a red flag. Telling fifteen people one by one the night before is an hour on the phone and two who do not answer.
Groups by level
A first lesson and an improver session share neither the same wave nor the same instructor. The sorting has to happen at sign-up.

Practical guide: Surf schools
- Open your slots a week at a time rather than a month: the tide is known in advance, and you stay in charge of the real hours.
- A lesson's capacity is your stock of wetsuits or boards — whichever is smaller.
- A "height, shoe size and level" field at booking: the kit is out before the group arrives.
- If you have to postpone, cancel the lesson from the diary: the whole group gets the message at once.
- A deposit on multi-day courses, which get booked weeks ahead.
- One lesson per level, with its capacity and its instructor: the sorting happens at sign-up, not on the sand.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a surf lesson cost in the UK?
Around £35 to £60 for a two-hour group lesson including wetsuit and board, and £70 to £130 for a private lesson. Set your own prices.
What licensing does a UK surf school need?
This is one of the few adventure activities that genuinely is licensed. Under the Activity Centres (Young Persons' Safety) Act 1995 and the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations, providing surfing commercially to under-18s requires a licence from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority, inspected against safety management standards — operating without one where the scheme applies is a criminal offence. Adults-only provision falls outside the scheme but not outside the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Beyond the licence: instructor qualifications through Surfing England or the equivalent home nation body, a current beach lifeguard or surf lifesaving award, enhanced DBS checks for work with children, public liability insurance, and permission from the landowner or council for the beach you operate on.
How do I handle hours that change with the tide?
By opening your slots a week at a time, with the real times.
How do I tell a whole group about a postponement?
From the diary. Everyone booked gets their message at once.
Can I limit sign-ups to my stock of kit?
Yes, with a capacity equal to the smaller of wetsuits or boards.
