The challenges facing paragliding schools
The wind decides, and postponing has to be simple
A day cancelled is eight flights to move. Eight calls or one message to everyone with the new date: the difference is a morning.
A tandem takes one pilot per passenger
Three pilots, three flights at once, not four. Capacity is counted in available pilots, not in slots shown.
Gift vouchers make half the year-end sales
Bought in December, used in May, on a date that will depend on the wind. Without tracking, one comes out on a Sunday and nobody knows whether it is still valid.
A booking without a deposit does not hold
The flight gets booked weeks ahead and cancelled at the customer's own first doubt about the forecast. The deposit makes the difference.
Weight, age, fitness: it all gets asked beforehand
The wing is chosen for the passenger, and some conditions are not discovered at take-off.

Practical guide: Paragliding schools
- Each pilot has their own diary: a tandem is only offered if a pilot is genuinely free.
- Weather cancellation from the diary, with the new date in the message. The whole day is told in one operation.
- A deposit at booking on every flight. That is what separates an intention from an appointment.
- Gift vouchers sold online with their validity shown. That is your December.
- A required "weight, height, age, medical history" field: the wing is chosen before arrival.
- A reminder the day before with the exact meeting point and what to wear. In the hills, an address is never enough.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a tandem paragliding flight cost in the UK?
Around £100 to £180 for a tandem flight depending on site and duration, and £600 to £1,200 for an elementary pilot course. Set your own prices.
What do you need to fly passengers for payment in the UK?
Paragliders sit in an unusual corner of aviation law. They are foot-launched flying machines and are exempt from most of the certification and licensing requirements that apply to aircraft under the Air Navigation Order, which is why there is no CAA pilot licence for them. Carrying a passenger for valuable consideration is nonetheless restricted, and in practice tandem flying for reward operates through the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association's tandem pilot rating scheme, administered under arrangements with the Civil Aviation Authority — the exemption and its conditions are what you need to check with the BHPA before charging. Add third-party insurance, site agreements with landowners and clubs, and a documented weather and passenger screening procedure.
How do I postpone a day of flights because of weather?
From the diary. Everyone booked gets their message at once.
How do I manage pilot availability?
With one diary per pilot: a tandem only shows if a pilot is free.
Can I sell gift vouchers?
Yes, online, with their validity shown.
Can I ask for a deposit at booking?
Yes, with the terms shown before payment.
