Frequently asked questions
Is orthoptic treatment available on the NHS?
Yes. Orthoptics is a core NHS hospital eye service, and most orthoptic care in the UK is delivered in NHS eye departments and community services following referral, usually free at the point of use. Private orthoptic practice exists alongside it, typically for faster access, specialist binocular vision work or assessments requested by schools and optometrists. Around £60 to £130 is common for a private assessment. Set your own prices.
Do you need a referral to see an orthoptist?
Not always. NHS orthoptic services are normally accessed through referral from a GP, optometrist, health visitor or school vision screening, and referral is what gets you into the hospital eye service. In private practice you may see patients directly, but you must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council: "orthoptist" is a protected title and using it without registration is a criminal offence. The British and Irish Orthoptic Society sets professional standards. An enhanced DBS check applies for work with children.
