What does a UK music school need in place?
Teaching music is unregulated and no qualification is required, so the obligations are safeguarding and premises rather than professional. One-to-one teaching of children is regulated activity: enhanced DBS checks with the children's barred list for every teacher, a safeguarding policy with a designated lead, and rooms with visibility — glazed doors or open doors are the standard expectation, and Music Mark and the Incorporated Society of Musicians both publish guidance schools work to. Add public liability insurance, portable appliance testing for amplification, and a written agreement for loan instruments. If you hold concerts open to the public, the venue's licensing and fire risk assessment apply, and performing published repertoire in public requires the appropriate music licence.
