The challenges facing career coaches
A programme is ten sessions over twelve weeks
It is not a series of appointments, it is a path. Booked in one go it holds; picked up by phone every fortnight it spreads over six months and loses its effect.
The first meeting is free and it decides everything
It is what turns curiosity into commitment, and it is the one you lose by asking for a contact form. It has to be bookable on its own, in thirty minutes.
The client is in a job
They can come neither in the morning nor at the end of the day, and they do not want to take leave. Video over lunch is often the only real window.
The funding gets arranged before the first session
Employer, outplacement provider, self-funded: each route has its paperwork. Asked for afterwards, it delays the whole programme.
A missed session pushes back the conclusion
The sessions run on with personal work between each. An absence cannot be made up by bringing the next one forward.

Practical guide: Career coaches
- The discovery meeting as a free thirty-minute service, at the top of the page. It is the best contact form a career practice has.
- The whole programme booked on recurrence from the first meeting: ten dates, one operation.
- Two services, "by video" and "in person", with their own slots. The video link is created automatically and goes out in the confirmation.
- Lunchtime slots open by video only. That is the window for people still in work.
- Custom fields for funding: who is paying, employer, current situation.
- A reminder the day before each session. Over a twelve-week programme, one absence pushes the conclusion back by the same amount.
Frequently asked questions
How much does career coaching cost in the UK?
Around £80 to £200 an hour, £500 to £1,500 for a programme of six to ten sessions, and £1,000 to £4,000 per person for employer-funded outplacement. Set your own prices.
Is there any public funding for career coaching in the UK?
Not in the French sense, and it is worth saying so plainly: there is no compte personnel de formation, no statutory bilan de compétences, and no individual training account. Three routes exist instead. The National Careers Service provides free careers guidance in England, funded by government, which sets the baseline your paid service has to beat. Employers fund outplacement directly, usually as part of a settlement agreement, and that is where the money is. And the apprenticeship levy can fund accredited coaching and leadership programmes, but only where the qualification is on the approved list and delivered by a provider on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers. Career coaching itself is unregulated; the Career Development Institute holds the professional register that employers look for.
