The challenges facing swim schools

  • The block runs to ten lessons at the same slot

Learning does not break into isolated appointments. The block goes in all at once, with its ten dates, or families drop out by the fourth.

  • The lane limits everything

It is hired from the pool, by the hour, and it does not split. It sets the number of groups, not the number of parents ringing.

  • Two children in one family, two levels

The parents want the same time, and the levels do not mix in one lane. You need two groups in parallel or an unhappy family.

  • The block gets paid up front or it gets paid badly

Ten lessons taken one at a time is ten chances to forget. Settled at the start, the block is committed on both sides.

  • The reminder is for the parents

The child does not manage their diary, and a missed lesson in a block of ten is hard to make up.

Practical guide: Swim schools

  1. The block set on recurrence at sign-up: ten dates, one slot, one operation.
  2. Each lane is a resource with its hired hours. Two groups cannot cross in it.
  3. One group per level and age, each with its capacity. That is what lets you place two children from one family at the same time.
  4. Payment for the block at sign-up, in full or as a deposit.
  5. The parent's number on the child's record: that is where the reminder goes.
  6. A "can put their face in the water, has swum before" field at sign-up: the group is made up before the first lesson, not during.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a block of swimming lessons cost in the UK?

Around £80 to £180 for a block of ten group lessons and £250 to £450 for a block of one-to-one lessons. Set your own prices.

What do you need to run a swim school in the UK?

Nothing is licensed, but everything is contracted. The pool operator sets the conditions of hire, and they will require teaching qualifications from Swim England or the Swimming Teachers' Association at the right level, a current rescue award, enhanced DBS checks with the children's barred list for every teacher, public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and your teacher to pupil ratios in writing. The pool's own Normal Operating Procedure and Emergency Action Plan under HSG179 govern who supervises the water, and you have to work inside them. Add a safeguarding policy with a designated officer, and written parental consent covering medical information and photography.

Can I book a block of ten lessons in one go?

Yes, with recurring bookings and a single payment.

How do I manage the lanes?

By declaring each lane as a resource with its hired hours.

Can I run two levels at the same time?

Yes, as two groups in parallel, each with its own capacity.

Can the reminder go to the parents?

Yes. It follows the contact on the record, with the child's name in the message.
