The challenges facing magicians and entertainers
Three audiences, three formats, three durations
An hour-long children's party and three hours of walkaround at a wedding have nothing in common. One price on the page and you lose both.
The date gets held with a deposit, the balance on the day
A date held on a promise frees up at the next call. The deposit commits both sides and ends the chasing.
The brief gets collected beforehand, or discovered on site
Age of the audience, number of children, venue, ceiling height, power available. Those questions change the show and belong at booking.
Travel is part of the price
Twenty miles for an hour's show is not the hall down the road. Stated at booking, the fee does not get discussed.
Saturday is the only day that counts
The whole diary rests on weekends and school holidays. A date lost is not made up the following week.

Practical guide: Magicians and entertainers
- One service per audience and duration: birthday, wedding, conference, Christmas party. Four formats, four prices, four sets of slots.
- A deposit at booking on every date. It is the practice of the trade, and it is well understood.
- Travel charges by area, shown before confirmation.
- A required "audience age, numbers, venue, technical constraints" field. The show gets prepared, not improvised.
- A booking horizon open far ahead on Saturdays. Weddings get decided a year out.
- A reminder a week before with the technical requirements restated: table, socket, space. It prevents bad surprises on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a magician cost for an event in the UK?
Around £200 to £400 for an hour at a children's party and £400 to £900 for close-up magic at a wedding or corporate event. Travel is counted separately. Set your own prices.
What does a UK children's entertainer need?
The trade is unregulated, but three things decide whether you get booked. An enhanced DBS check with the children's barred list: working with children at parties and in schools is regulated activity, and schools and nurseries will not let you in without the certificate — note that as a self-employed entertainer you cannot request your own enhanced check and must go through an umbrella body or an agency. Public liability insurance, which every venue asks to see. And a written risk assessment, particularly if your act involves fire, balloons filled with gas or animals — performing with animals brings its own licensing under the animal activities regulations, and helium is a compressed gas with storage rules.
