What licences do you need to play music for karaoke?

TheMusicLicence, which combines PRS for Music and PPL and covers playing recorded music and performing songs in public — karaoke needs both halves, because the songwriter and the recording are protected separately, and karaoke track suppliers licence the backing separately again. Playing without it is copyright infringement, and PRS does enforce. On the venue side, selling alcohol requires a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003 with a Designated Premises Supervisor. Regulated entertainment rules were relaxed by the Live Music Act 2012 for smaller audiences at certain hours on licensed premises, but conditions on noise and hours commonly appear in the licence itself — and environmental health can serve a noise abatement notice regardless.
