The challenges facing gardeners

  • Maintenance is a recurring contract

Every two or three weeks, April to October. Booked by hand, that is twenty appointments per customer.

  • The season decides everything

Seven months of saturation, five months quiet, and a schedule that has to change with it.

  • Plot size determines the duration

Two hundred square metres or two thousand: not the same day.

  • Weather shifts everything

A week of rain, and twenty appointments to push back one by one.

Practical guide: Gardeners

  1. Book maintenance on recurrence for the whole season: one gesture per customer, not twenty.
  2. Two sets of hours, high season and low season.
  3. A "plot size and type of ground" field that determines the length of the visit.
  4. Travel charges by area, for gardens further out.
  5. When it rains, reschedule from the diary and every customer is told automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book recurring maintenance?

Yes, for the whole season in one operation.

Can I change hours by season?

Yes, with two sets of opening hours.

How do I handle a weather postponement?

From the diary. Every customer concerned gets their message.

Can I charge for travel?

Yes, by area, shown before confirmation.

What certification does a UK gardener need?

None to garden — but three things catch people out. Taking green waste away makes you a waste carrier: registration with the Environment Agency or its national equivalent is compulsory, and carrying waste unregistered is an offence. Applying professional plant protection products requires certificates of competence, in practice the PA1 plus PA6 units, and using professional products without them is unlawful. And hedge and tree work runs into the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offence to damage or destroy an active nest — in practice that closes hedge cutting from around March to August. Check too for Tree Preservation Orders and conservation areas before any tree work.
