The challenges facing climbing walls
The centre has a safe occupancy
Beyond it, safety fails. Counting entries by hand on a Saturday afternoon does not work.
Instructed introductions
They take an instructor and a section of wall, and they cannot overlap with open climbing slots.
Parties
A group, a slot, a deposit, and a list of participants to collect beforehand.
Shoe and harness hire
A finite stock, to be booked at the same time as the slot.

Practical guide: Climbing walls
- Declare the centre's capacity per slot: booking closes itself.
- Introductions as a separate service, taking an instructor and limited in number.
- A deposit on parties: that is a whole slot and a supervisor committed.
- A "number of participants and shoe sizes" field to get the kit ready before arrival.
- Open the Saturday slots first: they go weeks ahead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cap the number of climbers per slot?
Yes, with a capacity per slot.
How do I manage a party?
As a service that takes an instructor and a slot together, with a deposit.
Can kit be booked at the same time?
Yes, as counted resources chosen with the slot.
Can I run several instructed sessions in parallel?
Yes, if you have the instructors: each is a resource.
What safety framework applies to a UK climbing wall?
Indoor walls sit outside the Adventure Activities Licensing scheme, which covers climbing on natural features, so the framework is the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 plus the industry standard. The Association of British Climbing Walls sets the operating benchmark, with BS EN 12572 for wall construction and annual inspection, and the British Mountaineering Council's participation statement is the basis of the registration and induction process every wall uses: climbers register, declare competence or are supervised, and the record is kept. Expect a written risk assessment, documented equipment inspection with retirement dates, staff trained to a recognised award for instructed sessions, and public liability insurance. Note that a registration form cannot exclude liability for negligence — the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 makes that void.
