Does a celebrant-led ceremony have legal effect in the UK?
It depends which nation, and the difference is stark enough that it belongs on your website. In England and Wales a marriage is legally formed only by a registrar at a register office or approved premises, by an authorised person in a registered religious building, or under the Church of England's own procedure — a celebrant-led ceremony has no legal effect, and couples must attend the register office separately. The Law Commission recommended reform in 2022; it has not been implemented. Scotland is different: belief celebrants, including those authorised through the Humanist Society Scotland, may solemnise legally binding marriages, and have done since 2005. Northern Ireland has recognised humanist marriage since 2018. Say plainly which applies where you work.
