The challenges facing teeth whitening clinics

  • A course sells as a package, not by the visit

Two or three closely spaced appointments give the result. Sold one at a time, the second and third never get booked.

  • The medical history gets completed before arrival

Pregnancy, orthodontics, sensitivity, recent treatment. Asked in the chair, those questions cost ten minutes and sometimes cancel the appointment.

  • Short slots fill the quiet hours

Thirty minutes that drop between two longer appointments, or mid-afternoon. They have to be visible online first.

  • A package gets used up with no record

Three sessions paid for, one done. History attached to the client record settles it without a conversation at the desk.

  • A no-show on a short slot still costs

Thirty empty minutes over and over turns into whole days. The night-before reminder is what prevents them.

Practical guide: Teeth whitening clinics

  1. The course as a single service, with its visits booked in advance. The patient leaves with all three dates.
  2. A medical history in required fields. What is not completed is not booked.
  3. Open your mid-day short slots to online booking. Those are the ones nobody asks for on the phone.
  4. The package attached to the patient record: the balance is read, not argued over.
  5. A reminder the evening before, with the pre-treatment instructions.
  6. State your GDC registration on the booking page. It is protection as much as information.

Frequently asked questions

How much does teeth whitening cost in the UK?

Around £250 to £600 for a course of in-chair or dentist-supervised home whitening, and £150 to £350 for home trays alone. Set your own prices.

Who is allowed to whiten teeth in the UK?

This is the point on which the UK differs sharply from much of Europe. Tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry: it may only be carried out by a dentist registered with the General Dental Council, or by a dental hygienist or therapist on the prescription of a dentist and after the dentist has examined the patient. Beauty therapists and "smile bars" offering whitening have been prosecuted by the GDC, and illegal practice of dentistry is a criminal offence. Separately, the Cosmetic Products Regulation restricts products releasing between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide to supply by a dental practitioner, with the first use in the cycle carried out by them. Anything above 6% may not be supplied to the public at all.

Can I sell a course of several sessions?

Yes, as one service with the visits booked in advance.

Can I have a medical history completed before the appointment?

Yes, with required custom fields.

How do I track a three-session package?

It attaches to the patient record and the balance updates itself.

How do I fill my quiet hours?

By opening the short mid-day slots online and putting a promo code on them.
