The challenges facing snooker and pool halls

  • A table hires by the hour, an evening hires the room

Two units of sale in the same place. A private hire accepted by mistake on an evening where six tables are already booked, and the night starts badly.

  • Pool, English, snooker: each table has its players

A snooker player does not settle for a pool table. These are not interchangeable slots, they are different tables.

  • A coaching session blocks a table and a slot

Two resources at once, and only one of them is visible in a paper book. It is the booking most often doubled.

  • Off-peak hours do not sell at the counter

The tables are empty from 2pm to 6pm and full at 9pm. What is visible online fills; what has to be asked for on the phone does not get asked for.

  • Cue hire and chalk are not the only extras

Cue hire, drinks, a birthday package. Offered at booking with their price they sell; offered at the bar, they get lent.

Practical guide: Snooker and pool halls

  1. Each table is a resource, with its type. The player books a snooker table, not "a table".
  2. Private hire as a separate service that takes the whole room: it only shows if no table is already booked.
  3. The coaching session books the coach and the table together. Neither ends up sold twice.
  4. An off-peak rate visible online on the afternoon windows. It is the only way to fill them.
  5. Extras — cue hire, birthday package — offered with their price at booking.
  6. Thursday-night regulars on a recurring slot: it is the most predictable income in the hall.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an hour of snooker cost in the UK?

Around £8 to £15 an hour for a snooker table and £6 to £12 for pool, with off-peak rates lower and membership schemes common. Set your own prices.

Do you need a licence to serve drinks in a snooker hall?

To sell alcohol, yes: a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003, with a Designated Premises Supervisor holding a personal licence, and age verification with a Challenge 25 policy. Hot food or drink sold between 11pm and 5am is late night refreshment and needs to be authorised too. Two other licences catch halls out. Playing recorded music in a public space requires TheMusicLicence, covering PRS for Music and PPL, and it applies to a radio behind the bar as much as to a playlist. And gaming machines need a permit from the licensing authority, with limits on number and stake.

Can I manage several types of table?

Yes, each declared as a resource with its type.

How do I handle a private hire of the room?

As a separate service that takes every table at once.

Can I offer a different afternoon rate?

Yes, with an off-peak service or a promo code on those windows.

Can I book a fixed slot for a club or a regular?

Yes, with recurring bookings.
