What do you need to practise as a play therapist in the UK?
Play therapy is not statutorily regulated and the title is not protected, which makes the voluntary registers the real gatekeepers. Play Therapy UK holds a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, and the British Association of Play Therapists accredits training and members; schools, local authorities and insurers work to one or the other, and both require a postgraduate qualification, clinical supervision and CPD. Two requirements are not optional whatever your route: an enhanced DBS check with barred list checks, since this is regulated activity with children, and a written safeguarding policy with a named local authority referral route. Schools will ask for both, plus insurance, before you set foot in the building.
