Is "interior designer" a protected title in the UK?
No, but a neighbouring word is, and the distinction has teeth. "Architect" is protected by the Architects Act 1997: only someone registered with the Architects Registration Board may use it in business, and misuse is a criminal offence which the ARB prosecutes — including compound forms such as "interior architect", which it has pursued. "Interior designer" and "interior decorator" are not protected and require no qualification. What matters commercially is elsewhere: membership of the British Institute of Interior Design, professional indemnity insurance, and knowing when a project needs building regulations approval, planning permission or listed building consent — structural alterations are not a design decision.
