Twelve mats, one studio, a weekly timetable: every class closes itself at the last place and reopens the moment somebody drops out.

The challenges facing gyms
Group classes counted by hand
Twenty places, sign-ups by WhatsApp, and three people too many on Saturday morning.
Last-minute drop-outs
A place frees at 6pm for the 7pm class. Nobody knows, and it stays empty.
A timetable that changes every week
A class moved, a coach off, and everybody to tell one by one.
Personal training in the same diary
A one-to-one session is not a group class, but it uses the same studio.

Practical guide: Gyms
- Declare each class's capacity: sign-ups close themselves at the last place.
- Allow drop-out up to two hours before: the place goes back online and often gets taken.
- Set the timetable on weekly recurrence, then close holiday weeks in a block.
- Personal training as a separate service, with its own duration and price.
- A reminder two hours before evening classes brings in the ones who were hesitating.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cap the number of participants per class?
Yes, with a capacity per class.
What happens when somebody drops out?
The place goes straight back online, within the window you set.
Can I manage several coaches?
Yes, each with their own diary and classes.
Can I sell ten-class cards?
Yes. They attach to the member's record and the balance updates itself.
What rules apply to UK gym membership contracts?
Consumer law, and it has been enforced specifically in this sector. The Competition and Markets Authority took action against gym operators over unfair membership terms, and the resulting standard is clear: minimum terms must be proportionate and explained before joining, members must be able to cancel where their circumstances change materially — injury, redundancy, moving away — automatic renewals and price rises must be notified, and cancellation must not be made unreasonably difficult. Terms that fail the fairness test under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 are not binding. Contracts sold online carry a 14-day cancellation right unless the member expressly asks to start sooner. Publish your terms where they can be read before payment.
