The challenges facing electricians
The quote before the job
A short visit, then a long job. Two appointments that nothing connects in a paper diary.
Driving between jobs
It is sometimes half the day and appears nowhere.
Calls during a job
Hands inside a consumer unit, you do not pick up.

What certification does an electrician need in the UK?
There is no licence to be an electrician, but there is a route you cannot avoid for domestic work. Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales makes certain electrical work in dwellings notifiable: either you are registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA and self-certify, or the work must be notified to building control and inspected, which costs the customer more. Scotland works through building warrants instead. Two recurring duties are worth building into your diary: landlords in England must have an Electrical Installation Condition Report at least every five years under the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020, and portable appliance testing follows from the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
