The challenges facing drama schools
The annual sign-up and the February course do not sell the same way
One commits to thirty sessions and gets paid in September, the other to five days and gets decided in January. Treating them as one product blurs both.
The capacity makes the quality of the class
Fourteen students, not thirty. Beyond that nobody plays enough and the work becomes impossible. The limit is not commercial, it is pedagogical.
The free trial class fills the year
It is the first contact, and it gets arranged by phone in September, at the worst possible moment. A trial place that cannot be booked on its own is a student lost.
Levels do not mix
A beginner in an experienced group slows everyone down. The routing happens at sign-up, not at the first run-through.

Practical guide: Drama schools
- One class per level, each with its capacity: the routing happens at sign-up.
- Create the trial class as a free service with limited places: it books itself, and it is what fills the year.
- The holiday course as a separate service, with its capacity, price and a deposit.
- Set the weekly timetable on recurrence and close the school holidays in one operation.
- An "age and experience" field at sign-up avoids the wrong group.
- Open September sign-ups in June: they happen while you are away.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a year of drama classes cost in the UK?
Around £250 to £600 for a weekly class over a school year, £70 to £180 for a weekend or holiday course, and £12 to £25 for a single class. Set your own prices.
What do you need to run drama classes and put on a show in the UK?
Teaching drama is unregulated, but two things bite when the work reaches an audience. Child performance: under the Children (Performances and Activities) (England) Regulations 2014, a child of compulsory school age performing in a show for which a charge is made generally needs a licence from the local authority where they live, applied for at least 21 days ahead, with an approved chaperone — a Body of Persons Approval can cover an organisation running its own productions. Copyright: performing a published play in public requires a licence from the rights holder or their agent, even for an end-of-year show with no ticket, and scripts must be bought not copied. Add enhanced DBS checks, a safeguarding policy, and a venue whose licensing and fire risk assessment cover a public audience.
