Booking software for Doulas

Support running from pregnancy to the postnatal weeks, an on-call period around the due date that blocks the diary, and a discovery meeting to begin with.

The challenges facing doulas

  • Support is a package and several appointments

Antenatal meetings, presence when the time comes, postnatal visits. Sold by the session it loses its meaning; sold as a package, the dates still have to go in.

  • On call around the due date blocks the diary

Three weeks during which you cannot promise anything to anyone else. That unavailability has to exist in the diary, or it gets discovered too late.

  • The discovery meeting decides everything

It is a choice of person as much as of service. Free, short and bookable on its own, it turns hesitation into a booking.

  • Appointments spread out then tighten up

One a month, then one a week, then several in a few days. It is not a regular recurrence, it is a rhythm that follows the pregnancy.

  • What is said in a meeting gets lost in between

Six months of support, twenty or so exchanges. Without notes attached to the record, every meeting starts again.

Practical guide: Doulas

  1. The discovery meeting as a free thirty to forty-five minute service, at the top of the page.
  2. One service per stage: antenatal meeting, preparation, postnatal visit. They share neither duration nor place.
  3. The on-call period blocked in the diary as an unavailability, as soon as the due date is known. That is what stops you promising the same week twice.
  4. The package's appointments booked in advance, even if they move. A date booked can be moved; a date not booked gets forgotten.
  5. A "due date, parity, birth preferences" field at the discovery meeting.
  6. A note on the record after each meeting. Six months of support is not held in your head.

Frequently asked questions

How much does doula support cost?

Around £800 to £2,500 for a full birth package including antenatal meetings, on-call and postnatal visits, and £20 to £35 an hour for postnatal support alone. Set your own prices.

Is the doula role recognised in the UK?

There is no statutory regulation, no protected title and no register: Doula UK and the training organisations set their own standards, and mentoring through a recognised course is what clients and insurers look for. One legal boundary is sharp and worth knowing precisely. Under article 45 of the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 it is a criminal offence for anyone other than a registered midwife or registered medical practitioner to attend a woman in childbirth, except in a sudden emergency or while training under supervision. A doula provides practical and emotional support and must not undertake clinical tasks — no examinations, no monitoring, no clinical advice. Say so plainly in your contract; it protects you as much as the client.

Can I block an on-call period in my diary?

Yes, with an unavailability over the period.

Can I offer a free discovery meeting?

Yes, as a £0 service, bookable on its own.

How do I manage a package of several appointments?

By booking the dates in advance and moving them as the pregnancy goes.

How do I find what was said at the previous meeting?

In the client record, with your notes.
