The challenges facing archery clubs

  • Every target is a place

Eight bosses, eight archers. The capacity is the shooting line, and it is about safety as much as comfort.

  • A beginners' course needs a coach, open shooting does not

Two services using the same space but not the same resources. A course accepted on a slot with no coach, and nobody is there to welcome the beginner.

  • Loan equipment gets booked with the slot

Six beginner bows, two of them left-handed. They are not accessories, they are extra places or they are not.

  • Membership and health details get asked at sign-up

Not on the shooting line. The question gets asked once, at booking, and the answer stays on the record.

  • The club runs without staff

Volunteers do not keep an office. What books itself online commits nobody.

Practical guide: Archery clubs

  1. Each slot's capacity set by the number of shooting positions.
  2. Loan equipment declared as a counted resource, with the left-handed bows separate from the rest.
  3. The beginners' course as a separate service, visible only on the slots where a coach is present.
  4. A "membership, health declaration, handedness" field at the first booking.
  5. Regular archers' slots set on recurrence for the season.
  6. A reminder the day before with the safety brief and the time the line opens.

Frequently asked questions

How much does archery cost in the UK?

Around £20 to £45 for a taster session with equipment, £80 to £250 for a beginners' course, and £60 to £180 a year for club membership. Set your own prices.

Do you need any authorisation to shoot a bow in the UK?

No certificate is needed for a bow: bows and arrows are not firearms and there is no licensing regime, and no minimum age in law for using one under supervision. Crossbows are different — the Crossbows Act 1987 makes it an offence to sell or hire a crossbow to anyone under 18, and possession by an unsupervised under-18 is also an offence. What governs a club is elsewhere. Archery GB affiliation brings the insurance most clubs rely on and sets the rules of shooting, including the overshoot distances and range layout that make a ground safe, which is what your landowner and insurer will check. Add a nominated field captain, a written risk assessment, enhanced DBS checks for coaching juniors, and equipment inspection records.

How do I limit sign-ups to the number of shooting positions?

With a capacity per slot.

Can loan equipment be booked with the slot?

Yes, as counted resources chosen at booking.

Can I separate beginners' courses from open shooting?

Yes, as two services with different resources.

Can I ask for membership and health details at sign-up?

Yes, with required custom fields at the first booking.
