The challenges facing car detailing studios
A whole day blocked for one vehicle
Decontamination, three polishing stages, protection: the unit is taken from morning to night. Cancelled the night before, that day cannot be replaced — nobody books eight hours of detailing for tomorrow.
Hatchback, SUV, van: it is not the same job
The surface area doubles and so does the time. One flat price loses money on the big vehicles and makes the price incomprehensible on the small ones.
Add-ons sell at booking, or not at all
Ceramic coating, leather restoration, wheel decontamination. Offered when the customer drops the keys, they look like a last-minute extra. Offered online with their price, they make the margin.
Curing time is not free time
A ceramic coating needs its hours to cure, and the unit stays occupied throughout. A diary that sells the next slot on the hour puts the car outside too early.
The phone while the polisher is running
Mask on, machine in hand, raking light: you do not stop to take a booking. And the customer looking for a quote on a Sunday evening will not find a switchboard.

Practical guide: Car detailing studios
- One service per vehicle size: hatchback, saloon, SUV, van. Same title, different duration and price — the customer recognises themselves at once.
- A deposit at booking on anything over four hours. It is the only thing that protects a day of unit time.
- Add-ons — ceramic, leather, wheels — chosen online, with their price and the time they add.
- Buffer time after protective treatments: curing occupies the space without being sellable time.
- A "model, colour, condition of the paint" field: you know what is coming before you open the gate.
- A reminder the night before with the drop-off and collection times. The customer plans the day around it, and comes.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a full detail cost in the UK?
Around £250 to £600 for a full correction detail and £600 to £1,500 with a multi-year ceramic coating, with maintenance details from £80. Set your own prices.
What rules apply to a UK detailing unit?
The one that catches operators out is water, not chemicals. Allowing wash water to run into a surface water drain is a pollution offence — surface water drains discharge straight to watercourses, and the Environment Agency, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales prosecute under the Environmental Permitting Regulations and the Water Resources Act 1991. Vehicle washing effluent must go to the foul sewer, which requires a trade effluent consent from your water company, or be contained and removed as waste. Add COSHH assessments for solvents and polishes, dust and vapour control, waste transfer documentation, and public liability plus motor trade insurance covering customers' vehicles in your custody.
Can I ask for a deposit at booking?
Yes, a fixed amount or a percentage, with the terms shown before payment.
How do I adjust the price to vehicle size?
By creating one service per size, each with its own duration and price.
Can I sell add-ons alongside the main service?
Yes, each with its price and the time it adds.
How do I reserve curing time?
With buffer time after the booking, invisible to the customer.
